Earlier this month, we had the privilege of joining Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona – the world’s largest gathering for smart cities and urban innovation. This annual event brings together city leaders, technology companies, researchers, and decision-makers from across the globe to explore how cities can lead the way in shaping a sustainable future.
Why Barcelona?
The overarching theme this year was “The Time for Cities” – a clear call for cities to take the lead in global transformation. With more than 25,000 participants and 1,100 exhibitors, the expo showcased cutting-edge solutions and bold ideas for greener, smarter, and more inclusive urban environments.
Key Highlights
- AI as a game-changer: Artificial Intelligence is becoming the backbone of future city infrastructure, governance, and mobility.
- Beyond technology: Cities are seen as human-centered ecosystems, prioritizing sustainability, efficiency, and social inclusion.
- Circular economy & low-carbon mobility: From digital transport services to energy-efficient infrastructure, the push for climate-friendly solutions was everywhere.
- Collaboration at scale: Local and regional governments, businesses, research institutions, and civil society are joining forces to accelerate green and digital transformation.
- Integrated urban platforms: GIS, BIM, digital twins, and real-time dashboards are enabling cities to move from isolated projects to holistic strategies.
Why It Matters
We are entering what many call “the century of cities.” Urban areas are not just adapting to change – they are driving it. The expo reinforced that now is the time for cities to seize opportunities and shape the societies of tomorrow.
Our Takeaways
For us, the event was more than an exhibition – it was a chance to connect, learn, and bring home insights that will inspire our work further. Seeing how global leaders integrate technology with human needs reminds us why collaboration is key to building resilient, inclusive cities.
What’s next?
This trip is part of our Smart Communities Inspiration Series for 2026 – a strategic initiative to bring leaders along the ride. Next year, we will continue the journey with study visits to Stockholm (February), Oslo (May), Tallinn (September) and return to Barcelona (November). Our goal is clear: to create arenas for knowledge sharing, foster partnerships, and accelerate the green and digital transformation together.
